How to Travel the World By Train

HOW TO TRAVEL THE WORLD BY TRAIN

Trains are one of my favorite transportation options. When my wife and I were in Bangkok back in 2012, we took an overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai and managed to have a great sleep, waking up rested in a new city the next day. It was far better than taking a bus. Trains provide a smooth (usually) and slightly romantic experience through scenery you may never see otherwise. Trains are also usually more comfortable than buses and if you can get a bed, you’ll save money on accommodation as well. Here are some websites to get you started.

TRAVEL THE WORLD BY AUTOMOBILE

Some of my best memories of travel have come from road trips. One of those special trips was back in 2011 when my wife and I took a 40-day road trip from Alberta, Canada all the way down the coast to San Diego, California, and back up through the deserts of Nevada, the red landscapes of Utah and the gushing geysers of Yellowstone National Park. It was absolutely incredible. We had the freedom to go wherever we wanted to and we could change our plans on a whim. Below are some tips for renting cars.

My 2015 Annual Review and Roadmap for 2016

by Matt Leave a Comment

I’m not usually one for making new year resolutions. I find it silly to wait until the end of the year to promise positive change when it can be started at any moment. However, after reading about Chris Guillebeau and his annual review, I began to look at it differently.

An annual review is not the same as new year resolutions. For me, it’s a chance to reflect over the last year and be grateful for all the beautiful things that happened. It’s a chance to remember all the amazing experiences but also a chance to reflect on what didn’t go as planned. After the reflection, you can do a brief plan for the year ahead. I like to leave a lot of room for spontaneity so my plans only serve as a direction for the upcoming months.

Regardless of whether you like to plan ahead or not, it’s always a good idea to reflect on the past year. I’m often surprised at how much I actually accomplished and the pros usually outweigh the cons, which is always nice to see.

So here it is…

LL 015: Travelling Around the World with a Family | An Interview with Greg Denning

by Matt 2 Comments

In the 15th episode of the Live Limitless podcast I chat with Greg Denning of DiscoverShareInspire.com and GregDenning.com.

Greg and his wife are traveling around the world with six kids! Need I say more? They have been traveling for more than 2700 days and are currently in the middle of a long road trip from Alaska to Argentina. What inspires me about Greg is not only the fact that he’s making full-time travel work with a family of eight but also because he remains super enthusiastic and his outlook on the world is very positive.

This episode focuses entirely on travel. We talk about:

  • How Greg and his family choose where to go
  • How the prepare for things like visas, vaccinations, etc.
  • How they prepare for the different cultures
  • Tips for those afraid to make such a bold move
  • Tips for staying safe
  • How they find accommodation and so forth
  • And how to bring the travel mindset home with you

I really hope you enjoy this episode. Please leave any comments for Greg below and leave a review in iTunes.

You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Travel

by Matt 30 Comments

Exploring Egypt with Matthew Bailey

I don’t know what it is about the terms “rich” and “travel” that society has seemed to put together but unless your talking about how “rich” in thought, character, and experience you will be when you travel, then they have nothing to do with each other.

I was recently watching an old movie called Wall Street and heard Charlie Sheen’s character say he wanted to make insane amounts of money so that he could leave the game and ride his motorcycle across China.

Wait a minute! I rented a motorbike in Indonesia for $3/day so I can assure you that insane amounts of money are not needed to ride across China or any other part of Asia.

Sadly, most people think like this. The experience of travel and vacations has constantly been sold to us with a “cash value”. Somehow society has been coerced into thinking that the experience of travel is intertwined with the amount of money you can spend on such a trip.

What bullshit. [Read more…] about You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Travel
