Death Makes Life Worth Living

by Matt 18 Comments

A couple nights ago, I was watching one of my favorite TV series called Community. The show is silly, hysterical and always makes me laugh. Every now and then, the show also tosses in some “life lessons” to give it some heart. One particular quote that made me shiver was…

Death is what makes life worth living.

It’s true. Death gives life a deadline. It gives us a rough timeframe to accomplish whatever it is we want to accomplish. Death makes us want to do things. It makes us want to enjoy life because we know it will end eventually. If you are given a pill that makes you immortal, what would be the point of doing anything anymore?

Who cares if you stay in the house for a full year playing video games. Who cares if you work a job you hate for the next 5 years instead of focusing on improving your life. Who cares if you find someone who makes you happy or go on that dream trip you always wanted to go on.

You have forever to do it! Your never going to die or age so you can put if off for eternity and continue to be lazy.

But that’s not how it works. And that’s a good thing.

Earl Baron is the man behind the incredible blog wanderingearl.com, where he inspires people to travel around the world. Earl has been “wandering” around the world for more than 13 years straight! Yup, more than 4000 days. He started off by working on cruise ships but has since become an entrepreneur by creating digital guides and now, thanks to his huge loving audience, personalized tours across Mexico, India, and other great locations around the world.

I’ve known Earl since I first started blogging three years ago. I haven’t met him in person yet but he has been one of the most helpful and all-around awesome guys I have met. His stories are sure to inspire some wanderlust in you and this interview will do the same.

Don’t Look For Paradise – Look For People

by Matt 1 Comment

Not just people – friends, relationships, and connections.

Robin Esrock, a travel writer (to say the least) inspired me recently in a talk he gave at TED. It resonated with me so much because I knew exactly what he was talking about.

Paradise is people.

In the last three years, I have traveled all over the world. I’ve experienced road trips throughout 13 U.S. states, spent three months in Mexico City, enjoyed five months in Australia and backpacked across New Zealand, Japan, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Borneo, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Burma.

Some of these places had “paradise” written all over them. The kind of paradise we think of when we see a picture with blue skies and turquoise waters. Places like the Perhentian Islands of Malaysia, almost every island in the Phillies, most of Indonesia, and beautiful southern Thailand.

But as beautiful as these places were (and I strongly recommend visiting “paradise” now and then,) they don’t compete with the beauty of friendship and connection I made on these trips.

I partied with Mexicans in Malaysia, joined a group of travellers in Flores, Indonesia and crashed a traditional Indonesian wedding that was powered by generators, and met a really cool eclectic group of Europeans who teamed up with us to hike into minority villages in Myanmar.

Those were the times I enjoyed and learned the most from.

Connecting.

Friends in Flores, Indonesia

Paradise is beautiful; sure, it makes your heart sing.

But you hit a higher note when you share the experience with good people.

On your next travels (or maybe even at home), focus less on seeing everything or finding the next beautiful spot and more on meeting the next awesome person.

Strike up conversations with locals. You’d be amazed how friendly the world is. You can learn so much by talking with people from different walks of life. This is what life-changing travel is all about. It’s what every trip should consist of. Travel is one of the best forms of education and inspiration available today.

Find good people and you’ll find paradise.
