Part Two: Driving to Canada’s Arctic

by Matt 1 Comment

Note: This is part two of a two-part story. If you’re new to the story, please read Part One: Driving to the Arctic Ocean first.

Igloo Church Inuvik

Exploring Inuvik, NWT

After a night in Eagle Plains, we drove more, and more, and more before taking a ferry across the Mackenzie Delta to Fort McPherson where we stopped for gas. By now, the scenery was getting to be slightly more flat, although we still found trees along the way. Eventually, maybe 4-5 hours later, we arrived in Inuvik, the biggest town in the Arctic. Here, we found amazing accommodation at the Mackenzie Hotel and were able to enjoy some really good food such as fish tacos at Alestine’s, an eclectic local restaurant where the kitchen is inside a yellow school bus. We love finding local restaurants like this but it’s certainly no secret. Aside from Alestine’s, we still used our camp stove to cook many other meals as there wasn’t a huge selection in the area and the grocery store prices were quite insane. A single Gatorade was $7! I really don’t know how people can survive with these prices but I suppose that’s why hunting and fishing are still so popular. [Read more…] about Part Two: Driving to Canada’s Arctic

Dream Trip Complete: Driving to Canada’s Arctic

I love a good road trip and Canada has plenty of them from an East coast Canada road trip or driving to the Northwest territories. There are so many beautiful places in Canada. There’s something about having a vehicle and being able to drive it where I want to go and about being able to comfortably pack my things and have them with me at all times. One of my bucket-list goals was to drive the infamous Dempster Highway all the way to Inuvik, Canada and then take the new highway to Tuktoyaktuk, Canada’s first road to the Arctic Ocean!

There was only one problem – The new highway wasn’t open yet. Luckily, however, I had a way to get around that. Back in 2017, I came up with the idea to travel across Canada for 150 days, creating a web series about Canada in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. This project allowed me to get special permission for a variety of things, one of them being access to the new Mackenzie-Delta Highway, the highway connecting Inuvik with Tuktoyaktuk in Canada’s Northwest Territories.

Yup, that’s right. I was literally allowed to drive the highway before it was opened to the public. I even had a construction crew join me! But first, back to the story. [Read more…] about Part One: Driving to Canada’s Arctic

Bringing in the New Year and Reflecting on the Last 365 Days

by Matt Leave a Comment

Writing this from Mexico City as we bring in 2018 with my wife’s side of the family, I’ve found writing this article to be quite difficult. Maybe I’m just tired. Maybe it’s because I don’t like planning all that much or maybe it’s because I always struggle with what to write. At the same time, it can be quite satisfying to think of the last 365 days and what’s been accomplished. It’s also a good idea to think of the next 365 days and the biggest goals I’d like to accomplish.

As many of you know, I also have a massive 100-item list that I’ve compiled, with goals I’d like to accomplish over the next 10 years (9 years from now). I completed my first 100-goal list in 10 years (still need to write about that) and thought I’d continue with the spirit of it all. However, we change along the way and some goals that might have seemed important last year might not be so important this year. So, I like to look it over at least once per year and erase any goals that no longer feel all that special. To be honest, it can also be hard to come up with 100 items. It used to be easy but as I complete some items, I’m finding 100 is almost too much. At the same time, if a list of 100 things helps inspire me to accomplish 80 really cool things, then it’s still a massive win in my books. Who cares about the other 20 right? My First Cliff Jump

by Matt Leave a Comment

I must admit, my first cliff jump was not that crazy. It was only about three or four metres. However, it had a profound impact on my life.

It was only my second time out of Canada – a one-week trip to Cancun with my girlfriend at the time. Up until then, I hadn’t been a very adventurous guy but one day when we were tubing down a river at Xel-Ha Park, I noticed a cliff-jump and summoned up the courage to give it a try.

I climbed off my tube, swam to the shore, and climbed up to the platform. From there, I walked to the edge, looked down, and froze. It looked so high and although I knew I couldn’t back out and do the walk of shame, I just couldn’t make the jump. Then a little girl, maybe 8-years-old, ran by me and jumped off the cliff with no fear at all.

Now I really had to do it.

Monarch Butterflies Mexico

(Note: Visiting the Monarch butterfly sanctuaries of Mexico was one of my 100 things to do before the age of 31 list. Ever since I learned about it, I wanted to make it happen. I’ve since been twice and have also completed all 100 things from “the list”. Want to see the list? click here.)

Deep in the forests of central Mexico’s mountains, a natural phenomenon takes place each and every winter. The forests become absolutely smothered in colourful monarch butterflies that have migrated all the way from Canada.

Speaking in Front of 100+ People

by Matt Leave a Comment

Two weeks ago, I got a message from my friend Steve asking if I wanted to give a talk at an event called Pechakucha. He sent me some links about the event and told me that the theme was about less. He knew I travelled for less and therefore would be a good candidate to speak. I always wanted to give a talk in front of a crowd so I said yes.

Later I found out that I would be in front of over 400 people. My biggest talk prior to this was in front of maybe 35 people. Needless to say, I was both excited and nervous. Perfect.

Speaking in front of a crowd pechakucha

Pechakecha events consist of a slideshow presentation with 20 slides x 20 seconds of talking per slide. They happen around the world. I decided to not just talk about travel. I wanted to have an overall inspiring message for living a limitless life so I dug deep and picked some incredible accomplishments I’ve had that were inspired by less.
