by Matt 5 Comments

In the fourth episode of the Live Limitless podcast I chat with Derek Earl Baron, who is also known as Wandering Earl.

Earl Baron is the man behind the incredible blog wanderingearl.com, where he inspires people to travel around the world. Earl has been “wandering” around the world for more than 13 years straight! Yup, more than 4000 days. He started off by working on cruise ships but has since become an entrepreneur by creating digital guides and now, thanks to his huge loving audience, personalized tours across Mexico, India, and other great locations around the world.

I’ve known Earl since I first started blogging three years ago. I haven’t met him in person yet but he has been one of the most helpful and all-around awesome guys I have met. His stories are sure to inspire some wanderlust in you and this interview will do the same.

10 Pictures that Changed My Life

by Matt 1 Comment

We’ll, it’s not the pictures themselves that changed my life but the actual moment that was captured. I love taking photos to help bring back memories of past travels. I absolutely love nature, stunning views, and meeting people while traveling the world and many of the pictures will encapsulate that. Of course, these are not the only 10 pictures that have changed my life but it’s a great place to start. Pictures are one of those things that can really stir up the emotions and get one yearning to travel. I hope these do that for you.

banff gondola
Beautiful view from the top of the Banff Gondola in Banff, Alberta. As a place just 2 hours from my house, I find myself here very often. Camping, white-water rafting and skiing. Without this place, I don’t think I’d be able to live in Calgary. One of the most beautiful places on earth.

Mount Batur Bali Indonesia
This was taken during my first-ever solo trip to Indonesia. It made me fall in love with South East Asia, which brought me back in 2012. This is stunning Batur, an active volcano in Bali, Indonesia.

Don’t Look For Paradise – Look For People

by Matt 1 Comment

Not just people – friends, relationships, and connections.

Robin Esrock, a travel writer (to say the least) inspired me recently in a talk he gave at TED. It resonated with me so much because I knew exactly what he was talking about.

Paradise is people.

In the last three years, I have traveled all over the world. I’ve experienced road trips throughout 13 U.S. states, spent three months in Mexico City, enjoyed five months in Australia and backpacked across New Zealand, Japan, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Borneo, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Burma.

Some of these places had “paradise” written all over them. The kind of paradise we think of when we see a picture with blue skies and turquoise waters. Places like the Perhentian Islands of Malaysia, almost every island in the Phillies, most of Indonesia, and beautiful southern Thailand.

But as beautiful as these places were (and I strongly recommend visiting “paradise” now and then,) they don’t compete with the beauty of friendship and connection I made on these trips.

I partied with Mexicans in Malaysia, joined a group of travellers in Flores, Indonesia and crashed a traditional Indonesian wedding that was powered by generators, and met a really cool eclectic group of Europeans who teamed up with us to hike into minority villages in Myanmar.

Those were the times I enjoyed and learned the most from.

Connecting.

Friends in Flores, Indonesia

Paradise is beautiful; sure, it makes your heart sing.

But you hit a higher note when you share the experience with good people.

On your next travels (or maybe even at home), focus less on seeing everything or finding the next beautiful spot and more on meeting the next awesome person.

Strike up conversations with locals. You’d be amazed how friendly the world is. You can learn so much by talking with people from different walks of life. This is what life-changing travel is all about. It’s what every trip should consist of. Travel is one of the best forms of education and inspiration available today.

Find good people and you’ll find paradise.

Soaring through the Jungle Canopy with Flight of the Gibbon

by Matt 4 Comments

flight of the gibbon

As we chilled out in the bohemian city of Chiang Mai, Thailand, we wondered what other thrilling activities we could do before heading into Laos. We already became elephant owners for a day at the amazing Patara Elephant Farm, found our own little private island near Koh Lipe, and learned how to cook delicious Thai food in Bangkok. Now we were looking for a different thrill to celebrate our amazing time in Thailand before leaving the country.

Then I stumbled across Flight of the Gibbon; a thrilling zipline adventure with more than 5km of ziplines woven through the jungle eco-system. Since we knew we were going to skip the famous Gibbons Experience in northern Laos (due to price and off-season weather), we knew we had to experience this. I’m a big fan of thrills and ziplining was mostly new to me despite riding North Americas fastest the year before.

Needless to say, I was excited.

Diving the USAT Liberty Ship Wreck with Bali Scuba

Finding Nemo

I had been wanting to dive a shipwreck for ages. I had missed the chance in Australia and my timing was off in the Perhentian islands. The ship was not ideal near Malapascua and it was not of interest in Sipadan. For a while, I assumed I wouldn’t get my “shipwreck opportunity” during our one-year Asian adventure – until we arrived in Bali, Indonesia.
