Who Wants to Jump Off a Bridge This June?

by Matt 10 Comments

Nervously Smiling as I await my 130 foot jump off the Auckland bridge.

It’s hard to explain the emotions I was going through as I began my ascent to the top of the Auckland Bridge in Auckland, New Zealand. It was only 3 weeks before this that I jumped out of a plane at 15,000 feet. Why would jumping off a bridge from just 130 feet up scare me?

We’ll, all I can say is that jumping off a bridge was far more terrifying to me than jumping out of a plane. My heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty. As the instructor told me what I needed to do, I felt almost paralyzed. My main hope was to make it back up to the bridge.

As my name was called, I remember that feeling in my chest. Not just butterflies but thousands of angry ones fluttering around in my stomach. I could imagine my body wondering why I would put it through something like this.

I had the bungy strapped to my ankles like ankle cuffs which made it hard to walk out to the ledge. I felt like I was a prisoner being walked out to the plank by pirates waiting to throw me to the bottom of the sea.

There I was, finally reaching the ledge of the platform, standing more than 130 feet above the ocean. The instructor told me to smile for the camera which I tried nervously to do while all my muscles were concentrating on the fall I was about to experience. My knees were trembling out of control and I felt like I wouldn’t have the energy or the ability to jump if I wanted to.

I remember that the instructor told me to jump as soon as they said 3 because:

A. If I hesitated, I may never jump; and

B. They monitor all the sailboats passing underneath and wouldn’t want me jumping into one.

and with that, they began the count. [Read more…] about Who Wants to Jump Off a Bridge This June?

You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Travel

by Matt 30 Comments

Exploring Egypt with Matthew Bailey

I don’t know what it is about the terms “rich” and “travel” that society has seemed to put together but unless your talking about how “rich” in thought, character, and experience you will be when you travel, then they have nothing to do with each other.

I was recently watching an old movie called Wall Street and heard Charlie Sheen’s character say he wanted to make insane amounts of money so that he could leave the game and ride his motorcycle across China.

Wait a minute! I rented a motorbike in Indonesia for $3/day so I can assure you that insane amounts of money are not needed to ride across China or any other part of Asia.

Sadly, most people think like this. The experience of travel and vacations has constantly been sold to us with a “cash value”. Somehow society has been coerced into thinking that the experience of travel is intertwined with the amount of money you can spend on such a trip.

What bullshit. [Read more…] about You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Travel

Vagabonding: Living the Choice of Freedom & Adventure

by Matt Leave a Comment

Since my 6 month journey down under, I can’t seem to picture my life without the constant curiosity and adventure of long-term travel. Life will never be the same for me. I will never happily be able to ride the migratory route to work each day, live in the same community my whole life, and partake in the everyday average hobbies and activities that have become continuous out of simplicity and habit.

I’ve always wanted to come up with my own term for what I do and the way I feel on the road but really it all comes down to the notion of vagabonding.

Vagabonding, by definition is: (1) The act of leaving behind the orderly world to travel independently for an extended period of time. (2) A privately meaningful manner of travel that emphasizes creativity, adventure, awareness, simplicity, discovery, independence, realism, self-reliance, and the growth of the spirit. (3) A deliberate way of living that makes freedom to travel possible. [Read more…] about Vagabonding: Living the Choice of Freedom & Adventure

Travel Tip: How to get 50% off 4 Star Hotels!

by Matt 3 Comments

I love travel as I’m sure everyone knows already. I also love doing it as cheap as I can and finding sweet deals. The same goes for hotels. Everyone likes saving money when they can and I love saving for travel and Priceline can definitely help.

I heard about Priceline 2-3 years ago because they were giving people the option to bid for airfare. Similar to an auction in some ways, you would bid the amount you want to pay for a particular flight and if the airline thought it was fair, you would win. This is only offered in the U.S. though so I didn’t have much reason to return.

Then I found out about bidding for hotels on Priceline which was also available in Canada. I used it on my trip to Vancouver 3 months ago and it worked fantastically! [Read more…] about Travel Tip: How to get 50% off 4 Star Hotels!

How to Fly Around the World for Free!

by Matt 2 Comments

(This post is now being updated)

Being able to fly around the world for almost free has been truly life-changing. How in the world would I have been able to get on a $15,000 one-way flight with my own suite and on-board shower if it wasn’t for learning how to master the world frequent flyer miles? Instead of $15,000, the flight was $89 plus points. I’ve also flown around the entire world in business class, along with my wife who enjoyed the added comfort and pampering.

This is not some scheme. It’s called travel hacking and it’s the simple art of mastering the frequent flyer mile industry. If you learn the tips, tricks, strategies involved in becoming a pro travel hacker, you will be flying around the world for next to nothing. Guaranteed. All you have to do is learn the steps and then make it a priority. I have a number of articles that are free for you to read.

Sheraton Vancouver
View from the Balcony of the 4-star Sheraton in Downtown Vancouver. Just $80 CAD!

If you want to take it more seriously, I also offer some paid courses, offering you 10-100x the value of what you’ll pay. If you’re Canadian, you’ll want to check out CanadianFreeFlyers.com, which is specifically designed for Canucks. You’ll learn everything you need to know to start earning hundreds of thousands of miles each and every year and how to redeem them for world trips. If you’re not Canadian, I recommend my other course Zero to Dream Trip (www.Zerotodreamtrip.com), which teaches the same things but focused more on American deals. Whichever course you choose, you’ll be able to make your dream trips happen for a fraction of the price, each and every year.

Talk to you soon,

Happy Travels,

Matt

Surfing in Canada & the Beauty of the West Coast

by Matt 3 Comments

Have you ever searched around your own city or town to see what adventures you could hit up? I always seem to overlook the possibility of adventure near my own city. I realized this when I was in New Zealand last year. I was hiking some of the mountains on the south island when someone asked me where I was from. When I told them I was from Calgary, which is about 1 hour from the Rocky Mountains, they immediately asked how the hikes were and how great the skiing was. I couldn’t even answer. I had never hiked the Rockies. I had lived in Calgary for about 6 years and had never hiked the rockies. I had only skied a couple times but never at one of the famous resorts. “What was I doing?” I thought to myself. I’m all the way across the world conquering countries when I haven’t even conquered my own yet. I decided that as soon as I returned, I would hike at least one trail before the end of the summer and I would try the 2 famous ski resorts closest to me in the winter. I did! And since then I have been trying to experience all that Canada (especially the west coast) has to offer. [Read more…] about Surfing in Canada & the Beauty of the West Coast
