LL 004: Interview with Wandering Earl

by Matt 5 Comments

In the fourth episode of the Live Limitless podcast I chat with Derek Earl Baron, who is also known as Wandering Earl.

Earl Baron is the man behind the incredible blog wanderingearl.com, where he inspires people to travel around the world. Earl has been “wandering” around the world for more than 13 years straight! Yup, more than 4000 days. He started off by working on cruise ships but has since become an entrepreneur by creating digital guides and now, thanks to his huge loving audience, personalized tours across Mexico, India, and other great locations around the world.

I’ve known Earl since I first started blogging three years ago. I haven’t met him in person yet but he has been one of the most helpful and all-around awesome guys I have met. His stories are sure to inspire some wanderlust in you and this interview will do the same.

The 100th Post, Special Thanks, Helpful Mondays, and Prizes

by Matt 8 Comments

Tim Ferriss and Matthew G Bailey
With Tim Ferriss

In honor of reaching the 100th post milestone, I’d like to share some thoughts on the potential direction of the site, my new “helpful Mondays”, and to celebrate the people, businesses, or things over the last few years that have inspired me to all new levels. What better way to say thanks than to share them with more people.

With John T. Unger

To begin, A World of Inspiration has changed a little over the years. I first started the site with the intention of interviewing inspiring people. Although that’s still part of the plan, I realized I also enjoyed sharing my own thoughts and travel stories. Now, after returning from another 11-month trip, I feel the title of the site is fading away. Whenever I think of the name, although I like it, I don’t feel it speaks to me anymore. I have since been creating a “storyboard” of sorts to come up with my vision for the site and a suitable name to carry it into the future.

New Series – The Most Important Word in the World

by Matt 5 Comments

Elephant park, Indonesia
New Friends in Indonesia

I’m so excited for this series to start.

It all began with a post I wrote a few weeks back about a time when I said “hello” to strangers in Indonesia and ended up having a great adventure with them. Lots of people said that they loved that post and I started to think of all the times I’ve had adventures from simply greeting other travelers. I wanted to inspire people to open themselves up to meeting new people and forming new relationships and potential adventures. Then I thought, how cool would it be to gather stories from other bloggers and travelers who have experienced this as well.

I wanted to hear all the amazing stories that people have from when they stepped out of the box and met some new friends.

I reached out to 7 awesome people to get the ball rolling. Each of them enthusiastically agreed to participate and thought it was a great idea.

The series was born. It starts this friday!

Each blogger will post their story on their blog at certain times over the next week or two. Each story will be about a time when they said “hello” to a stranger which then turned into an awesome adventure or a great friendship.

If you want to read these inspiring stories, just follow along by watching the “series page” or following me on twitter. Each time someone posts their story, I will link to it on the series page and tweet it over twitter. You can also like A World of Inspiration on Facebook and watch the wall, or subscribe to A World of Inspiration so you can stay updated all the time.

The following bloggers are part of this series:

Earl Baron of Wandering Earl

Matt Koenig of 1 Year Sabbatical

Rob Nights of Beyond Norms

Amy Scott of Nomadtopia

Niall Doherty of Disrupting the Rabblement

Robyn James of The Dropout Diaries

Steve Bloom of Do Something Cool

and of course, yours truly.

I can’t wait to read these great stories. Thanks to everyone involved and I hope you all feel the inspiration from the amazing stories we’re sure to read.

Do you have a great story of a time when you said “hello” to a stranger and it turned into a wicked adventure or a great friendship?

How to Make Money while Traveling the World – An Interview with Wandering Earl

by Matt 12 Comments

Earl Baron, Wanderingearl.comOkay, his name is not Wandering Earl, it’s Earl Baron, and he has a sweet blog titled  wanderingearl.com. Earl has also been traveling the world for over 10 years, hence the name of his site. He has no plans of ending his journey and is currently living in Mexico. I started talking to Earl during the early days of my blog and immediately felt how cool of a guy he is. Not only has he been very supportive in my own online journey, but he has also helped tremendously with my girlfriend and I applying for a job on a cruise ship. That’s right, Earl spent a large part of his travels working on cruise ships having a blast, traveling the world, and saving up lots of money. Since my girlfriend is from Mexico, he recommended that both of us go work on a cruise ship so we can be together, save money, and have the time of our lives. So pretty soon, I’ll be writing this blog from sea. Earl has been such an inspiration over the last few months that I thought I’d interview him so his inspiration can pass on to you. At the bottom of the interview will be a link to Earl’s awesome “cruise ship” ebook that is a MUST for those wanting to give this adventure a try.

Welcome Earl.

How long have you been traveling and blogging for?

For the most part, I’ve been traveling, working or volunteering overseas ever since I left for my first backpacking trip back in 1999 but I only started blogging in January of 2010.

What inspired you to start blogging about your journey?

Over the years I received a great deal of phone calls and emails from friends, friends of friends and even strangers that heard about my travels, asking me for advice about the countries I’d visit as well as how to live a nomadic lifestyle of their own. I always offered whatever assistance I could but it wasn’t until I began reading blogs that I realized I could reach a much larger audience. And I figured that if there was even a remote possibility that I could use my own travels to inspire others to achieve their own travel goals, I wanted to be a part of that mission. So I started the blog a few months later and have been motivated to keep it growing ever since!

How have you been funding yourself for all your “traveling years?” [Read more…] about How to Make Money while Traveling the World – An Interview with Wandering Earl

A Very Merry Christmas!

by Matt 7 Comments

Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope your all having a wonderful day with family and friends and if your at work (like my brother), know that your family is thinking of you and can’t wait to see you when your off. I hope you have been to some wonderful Christmas markets. Originally I was going to write about reflection on the year past and goal setting for the year ahead but I’ll leave that until next week. Since it’s Christmas I’d like to reflect on some of the great organizations and cool people I came across in 2010 and would like to say thanks to for all the inspiration you have given me throughout the year.

Earlier this year I bought 100 copies of the “Four Hour Work Week” so that I would have the opportunity to go down to San Francisco and meet Tim Ferriss and other cool people in the online world. It was a cool experience to have dinner next to Tim and 20 other participants from around the world followed by a party on a warship at the San Francisco harbor. Aside from quick introductions with Ramit Sethi, Kevin Rose, and Paula Abdul, I managed to briefly meet Noah Kagen of AppSumo who I asked to be my “voice” that yells at me to keep me motivated towards my dreams of location independence and online entrepreneurship. Noah was surprised I would come all that way just to network with people doing what I want to do and agreed. Thanks Noah!

Me and Tim Ferriss

I then read a book called “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” which I wrote about in an earlier post. This is the story of John Wood; a former high-level executive for Microsoft who chose to quit and start a non-profit organization called Room to Read. Room to Read helps build schools and libraries for children in less fortunate countries as well as supply them with books (in both English and their language) and grant scholarships to girls so that they can become educated and pass that on to their family. The organization is one of the best and the book brought tears to my eyes. [Read more…] about A Very Merry Christmas!
