10 Pictures that Changed My Life

by Matt 1 Comment

We’ll, it’s not the pictures themselves that changed my life but the actual moment that was captured. I love taking photos to help bring back memories of past travels. I absolutely love nature, stunning views, and meeting people while traveling the world and many of the pictures will encapsulate that. Of course, these are not the only 10 pictures that have changed my life but it’s a great place to start. Pictures are one of those things that can really stir up the emotions and get one yearning to travel. I hope these do that for you.

banff gondola
Beautiful view from the top of the Banff Gondola in Banff, Alberta. As a place just 2 hours from my house, I find myself here very often. Camping, white-water rafting and skiing. Without this place, I don’t think I’d be able to live in Calgary. One of the most beautiful places on earth.

Mount Batur Bali Indonesia
This was taken during my first-ever solo trip to Indonesia. It made me fall in love with South East Asia, which brought me back in 2012. This is stunning Batur, an active volcano in Bali, Indonesia.

Luang Namtha Laos
Beautiful Luang Namtha in northern Laos. This was our first stop in Laos as we crossed the border from Thailand. As one of the poorest countries on earth, I shed some tears here after meeting some of the wonderful locals and realizing just how much we take for granted in the western world. I took this picture from our moped before continuing on to the border of China.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat
Cambodia was our first stop on our 10-month South East Asian trip. We woke early to catch a glimpse of Angkor Wat at sunrise. After the crowds leave to go back to town for breakfast, we enjoyed two hours of peace and tranquility at one of the biggest religious monuments in the world.

guanajuato mexico
Mexico is a place close to my heart. Not just because my fiancé is from there but because its one of the best countries on earth for travellers. Stunning views, sparkling beaches, friendly locals and absolutely amazing food. This picture was taken while overlooking the UNESCO city of Guanajuato. I really loved the colours and this was one city I’d love to visit again.

komodo national park
A stop on Komodo National Park provided dazzling views of the archipelago surrounding us. Famous for it’s dragons, we cruised around on a sailboat for four nights while scuba diving with manta rays, white-tip sharks and strong currents.

wild pygmy elephants borneo
During one of our many river cruises in Borneo, Malaysia, we came very close to wild pygmy elephants eating on the side of the river. We spent almost an hour staring at these majestic creatures and realized how lucky we were to experience such a thing. As the baby elephant came closer to me, a boat hit the bank and scared her away. I was really hoping to shake her trunk. 🙂

kelimutu volcano moni indonesia
This stunning volcano called Kelimutu is situated in Moni, Indonesia. A small village on the island of Flores. The tri-coloured lakes are jaw-dropping to look at and I found it so hard to peel my eyes away from such a view. During our four night stay, we visited Kelimutu three times. between traditional weddings, friendly people, and a view like this, I couldn’t get enough.

perhentian islands malaysia
This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The Perhentian Islands of Malaysia are quiet, mostly undeveloped, and a great place for scuba diving. The waters were crystal clear with the sun reflecting it’s rays across the bottom of the seabed as we snorkelled amongst colourful fish and turtles.

Thresher shark malapascua
Never have I been so amazed as I was at this moment. Diving in Malapascua, a small island in the Philippines, we had two huge Thresher sharks swim around us for a good 10-15 minutes. I wanted to stop breathing so the bubbles would stop going in front of my eyes. As their big beady eyes watched over us, I couldn’t help but think how amazing this world of ours really is. I can’t wait for another moment like this.

This was a nostalgic post for me and I can’t wait to do another one. Pictures are magical. All of these moments had such an impact on my life and are the reason I continue to travel. With so many amazing experiences from world travel, I can’t see myself ever stopping. Travel has become my biggest passion and it’s an investment that truly makes one richer.
