Just in Time for the New Year: How to Transform Your body in 12 weeks

by Matt 10 Comments

I’m not fat anymore!

It actually took me awhile to realize this.

I grew up as a chunky kid throughout elementary and junior high school and always looked at myself as being out of shape. Even after completing this challenge, I could barely see my changes until I looked at the before-and-after pictures. It’s amazing how our minds can trick us.

After college, I had gained an extra 20 pounds of beer and burger fat and finally decided to commit myself to the 12-week Body-for-Life challenge that I had wanted to do since I was 17. I made a promise to myself that nothing was going to hold me back this time. No parties. No alcohol. No cheating. These 12 weeks would be one of my greatest challenges to date but one worth completing. A Year in Reflection + Goal Setting for 2011

by Matt 3 Comments

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Okay first off I should warn you that this post is around 1700 words. I seem to be writing longer posts than usual over the holidays. I like it but I don’t know if you like it. I wrote a guest post for another site the other day and it was around 1900 words! This post is basically a summary of accomplishments from 2010 and a summary of what I want to accomplish in 2011. I’d also like to hear what some of your goals are in the comments. It’s good to lay them out for others to read. It makes one feel a little more accountable.

So before we launch into the New Year with resolutions a blazin’, it’s a good idea to sit back and reflect on the year past. Review all the accomplishments you’ve had and go over what went good and what didn’t.

Congratulate yourself on all the things you feel you accomplished and most importantly, learn from the mistakes. Have some long-term goals in mind as well so you know what each little accomplishment is really working up to.

Consider writing down a lifestyle change you wish to make on top of the specific goals. For example, rather than just writing “quit smoking”, write about become a healthier person and living a healthy lifestyle. This means quitting smoking, becoming more active, and eating healthy.

Now to reflect on 2010. [Read more…] about A Year in Reflection + Goal Setting for 2011

A Very Merry Christmas!

by Matt 7 Comments

Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope your all having a wonderful day with family and friends and if your at work (like my brother), know that your family is thinking of you and can’t wait to see you when your off. I hope you have been to some wonderful Christmas markets. Originally I was going to write about reflection on the year past and goal setting for the year ahead but I’ll leave that until next week. Since it’s Christmas I’d like to reflect on some of the great organizations and cool people I came across in 2010 and would like to say thanks to for all the inspiration you have given me throughout the year.

Earlier this year I bought 100 copies of the “Four Hour Work Week” so that I would have the opportunity to go down to San Francisco and meet Tim Ferriss and other cool people in the online world. It was a cool experience to have dinner next to Tim and 20 other participants from around the world followed by a party on a warship at the San Francisco harbor. Aside from quick introductions with Ramit Sethi, Kevin Rose, and Paula Abdul, I managed to briefly meet Noah Kagen of AppSumo who I asked to be my “voice” that yells at me to keep me motivated towards my dreams of location independence and online entrepreneurship. Noah was surprised I would come all that way just to network with people doing what I want to do and agreed. Thanks Noah!

Me and Tim Ferriss

I then read a book called “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” which I wrote about in an earlier post. This is the story of John Wood; a former high-level executive for Microsoft who chose to quit and start a non-profit organization called Room to Read. Room to Read helps build schools and libraries for children in less fortunate countries as well as supply them with books (in both English and their language) and grant scholarships to girls so that they can become educated and pass that on to their family. The organization is one of the best and the book brought tears to my eyes. [Read more…] about A Very Merry Christmas!

Vagabonding: Living the Choice of Freedom & Adventure

Since my 6 month journey down under, I can’t seem to picture my life without the constant curiosity and adventure of long-term travel. Life will never be the same for me. I will never happily be able to ride the migratory route to work each day, live in the same community my whole life, and partake in the everyday average hobbies and activities that have become continuous out of simplicity and habit.

I’ve always wanted to come up with my own term for what I do and the way I feel on the road but really it all comes down to the notion of vagabonding.

Vagabonding, by definition is: (1) The act of leaving behind the orderly world to travel independently for an extended period of time. (2) A privately meaningful manner of travel that emphasizes creativity, adventure, awareness, simplicity, discovery, independence, realism, self-reliance, and the growth of the spirit. (3) A deliberate way of living that makes freedom to travel possible. [Read more…] about Vagabonding: Living the Choice of Freedom & Adventure

When Whales & Humans Unite

by Matt 4 Comments

I just heard about this story a couple days ago and thought I would share it with you. The amazing story of the encounter between people and a humpback whale near San Francisco.

The whale was following its typical migratory route when it became tangled in hundreds of pounds of crab lines causing her to struggle. As she struggled to become free, the lines became even more tangled around her body, tail, and around her mouth. The lines were becoming so tight around the whale that they were cutting into the blubber and leaving marks in the skin. The whale knew it was in trouble. Inspiring Interview Series: Andrew Heintzman of Investeco

by Matt 1 Comment

Last christmas, my brother bought me a book called Clean Money. The book is about investing in clean and green technology which to me is the next big thing. The book got me very interested in all the emerging technologies that will create our energy in the future. I’ve always been passionate about building a more sustainable future and the companies and ideologies featured in this book continue to inspire me.

Then, about a month ago I received an email from YEP (Youth Environmental Professionals) about a guy named Andrew who was coming to Calgary to speak about various green related things such as the importance of green entrepreneurs and the new technologies contributing to the green economy. I then emailed YEP and Andrew to score an interview for the site. [Read more…] about Inspiring Interview Series: Andrew Heintzman of Investeco
