Don’t Be That Guy

by Matt 1 Comment

Or girl.

The person who keeps making excuses in life. The person who thinks most things in life are just luck. The person who wishes for things rather than taking the time to plan out what they really want and taking action to get it. Instead, they switch on the TV and put their life on hold.

I know a lot of people like this. I think we all do.  At one point, I used to be one of them.

For example, I know some people who think that Texas Hold’em is just luck. I have some friends who play quite often but never seem to improve. They simply play and play without taking the time to learn about the game because they think it’s all luck.

Wrong.

It just seems like luck to passive players and onlookers but—in reality—it’s skill. It’s the procurement of years of practice. Is their some luck involved? Of course! There is always some luck involved when the cards are dealt, but if you have no skill, you won’t be able to do anything with that luck anyways. You must manufacture “luck” out of skill.

I enjoy the odd game of Texas Hold’em. When I sit down with skilled players, they always come out on top. They don’t always win but they are always in the top three. Every. Single. Time. This is because they know the odds, they know how to read players, and they know how and when to bluff.

Skill.

All the people you admire in life, whether it’s in business, sports, health or any other industry have aspired to achieve what they care about and have developed the skills necessary to bring them there.

If you enjoy something…build your skills around it. Focusing on what you care about and improving your skills with it will make it much more meaningful and exciting.

If you want to write a New York Times Best Selling book, take a persuasive writing course and try to connect with NY Times Bestselling authors. If you want to chisel out those abs of yours, adopt a fitness program and stick to it. Learn about nutrition. If you want to build an online business, hang out with people doing it and learn how they do it. Start failing. If you want to sail a boat, take a sailing course or volunteer on a yacht.

Once you begin to improve and harness your skills, you might start noticing a little more luck in life. But whatever you do, don’t just sit there watching the TV and wishing for luck to come.

It won’t.

What’s your thoughts on this? Do you know people who think everything in life is luck?
