A Cappuccino, a Painting, and Some Spontaneity

by Matt Leave a Comment

My first painting

A couple days ago I was sitting in a coffee shop writing out some thoughts and killing time before heading to an acting class I had that night. It was about 4:30 p.m. and the class started at 6. I was at a coffee shop far off the beaten path of where I needed to go which I had found after buying a coupon from Groupon weeks before.

It was the type of cafe I was looking for. A place with a big open space with tables for me to write at. Cool paintings and pictures aligning the walls that are made by local artists in which you can purchase. They have open mic nights, philosophy nights, board game nights, and so forth. They also make the best Cappuccino I have ever had.

As I sat writing up some potential future blog posts, I noticed a sign on one of the doors that read “Learn how to paint on canvas. Third tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.. Just $15”.

It just so happened it was the third tuesday of the month. [Read more…] about A Cappuccino, a Painting, and Some Spontaneity

Why you’ve already won the lottery (plus $100 for 10 comments)

by Matt 42 Comments

If you’re reading this post, you’ve already won the lottery.

It’s called the lottery of life.

If you have been born into a country like Canada, the United States, or any other developed country, you’ve won the birth lottery. You’ve won the lottery of being able to grow up in a country of freedom, education, and considerable wealth.

It’s sad that the birth lottery exists. Not everyone is so lucky.

If you lost the lottery, you won’t get the fortune of freedom and education. You won’t have the same opportunity to read or write and you won’t have access to clean water. You’ll probably be guaranteed a life of poverty because you don’t have the basic needs available to you or the education needed. You definitely won’t be able to participate in world discussions since you won’t have a computer or an Internet connection. You’ll be lucky to have a roof over your head and enough food to stay alive.

However, if you win the lottery, you will have the opportunity to read and write. You will have access to clean water and the opportunity of wealth. You will be able to learn about the planet and participate in discussions made possible because of a wide array of products such as computers, the Internet, iPads, iPhones, and many other electronic gadgets. You will have access to health care, healthy food, and sanitary waste disposal. You will also have access to all the basic needs as well as the opportunity to travel and think about deeper things in life.

It’s amazing what the simple chance of birth can do to how your life turns out. I think about how amazing the difference can be when born into one family compared to another.

For example, [Read more…] about Why you’ve already won the lottery (plus $100 for 10 comments)

A Year in Reflection + Goal Setting for 2011

by Matt 3 Comments

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Okay first off I should warn you that this post is around 1700 words. I seem to be writing longer posts than usual over the holidays. I like it but I don’t know if you like it. I wrote a guest post for another site the other day and it was around 1900 words! This post is basically a summary of accomplishments from 2010 and a summary of what I want to accomplish in 2011. I’d also like to hear what some of your goals are in the comments. It’s good to lay them out for others to read. It makes one feel a little more accountable.

So before we launch into the New Year with resolutions a blazin’, it’s a good idea to sit back and reflect on the year past. Review all the accomplishments you’ve had and go over what went good and what didn’t.

Congratulate yourself on all the things you feel you accomplished and most importantly, learn from the mistakes. Have some long-term goals in mind as well so you know what each little accomplishment is really working up to.

Consider writing down a lifestyle change you wish to make on top of the specific goals. For example, rather than just writing “quit smoking”, write about become a healthier person and living a healthy lifestyle. This means quitting smoking, becoming more active, and eating healthy.

Now to reflect on 2010. [Read more…] about A Year in Reflection + Goal Setting for 2011

A Very Merry Christmas!

by Matt 7 Comments

Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope your all having a wonderful day with family and friends and if your at work (like my brother), know that your family is thinking of you and can’t wait to see you when your off. I hope you have been to some wonderful Christmas markets. Originally I was going to write about reflection on the year past and goal setting for the year ahead but I’ll leave that until next week. Since it’s Christmas I’d like to reflect on some of the great organizations and cool people I came across in 2010 and would like to say thanks to for all the inspiration you have given me throughout the year.

Earlier this year I bought 100 copies of the “Four Hour Work Week” so that I would have the opportunity to go down to San Francisco and meet Tim Ferriss and other cool people in the online world. It was a cool experience to have dinner next to Tim and 20 other participants from around the world followed by a party on a warship at the San Francisco harbor. Aside from quick introductions with Ramit Sethi, Kevin Rose, and Paula Abdul, I managed to briefly meet Noah Kagen of AppSumo who I asked to be my “voice” that yells at me to keep me motivated towards my dreams of location independence and online entrepreneurship. Noah was surprised I would come all that way just to network with people doing what I want to do and agreed. Thanks Noah!

Me and Tim Ferriss

I then read a book called “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” which I wrote about in an earlier post. This is the story of John Wood; a former high-level executive for Microsoft who chose to quit and start a non-profit organization called Room to Read. Room to Read helps build schools and libraries for children in less fortunate countries as well as supply them with books (in both English and their language) and grant scholarships to girls so that they can become educated and pass that on to their family. The organization is one of the best and the book brought tears to my eyes. [Read more…] about A Very Merry Christmas!

What Would You Do If You Were Guaranteed Success

by Matt 7 Comments

Seriously, what would you do?

As easy as this question comes off, I have found it pretty difficult at times to answer. Sometimes I really know what it is but other times I’m undecided. Part of this is because of my interest in so many things.

I honestly love acting and if I could be guaranteed  leading roles in comedy flicks, that would be one option. I also love blogging and online entrepreneurship. I seriously love travel. The list could go on.

The trick is, at least for myself, to blend them all into a viable business or focus on one and keep the rest as hobbies.

I think lot’s of people are in the same boat. In fact, I know many people are in the same boat. Many people complain about their jobs or careers because they are not fulfilling. Something is missing. What most don’t do is try to solve it. You don’t have to own your own business. Maybe it’s as simple as working for a different company. Maybe it’s a different field. Maybe you just need to infuse some passions into your current work or business to make it more fulfilling. Maybe you just need to focus on more passions outside of work. Travel Tip: How to get 50% off 4 Star Hotels!

by Matt 3 Comments

I love travel as I’m sure everyone knows already. I also love doing it as cheap as I can and finding sweet deals. The same goes for hotels. Everyone likes saving money when they can and I love saving for travel and Priceline can definitely help.

I heard about Priceline 2-3 years ago because they were giving people the option to bid for airfare. Similar to an auction in some ways, you would bid the amount you want to pay for a particular flight and if the airline thought it was fair, you would win. This is only offered in the U.S. though so I didn’t have much reason to return.

Then I found out about bidding for hotels on Priceline which was also available in Canada. I used it on my trip to Vancouver 3 months ago and it worked fantastically! [Read more…] about Travel Tip: How to get 50% off 4 Star Hotels!
