Why Everyone Should Explore Their Own Backyard

by Matt Leave a Comment

This past December, I finally hiked to Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park. Despite living only two hours away, I had never even heard of Johnston Canyon before. Sure, I go to Banff and Lake Louise fairly often but I had never explored other activities and adventures in the area. I’ve been to 38 countries over the last seven years and yet I had never visited this beautiful place, which is basically in my backyard. Look what I was missing! It’s incredible!

Johnston Canyon Alberta

My first true hiking experience was near Queenstown, New Zealand, which is 13,000 kilometres from my home city of Calgary, Canada. New Zealand was the first country I visited on my first long-term trip overseas. My cousin joined me for the first three weeks and we decided to spend three days and two nights hiking along the Routeburn Track, passing by soaring mountain peaks, gorgeous waterfalls, and huge valleys. It was the experience of a lifetime to pitch our tent each night, carry a big 20-kg bag with all of our food and supplies, and just enjoy the wilderness of a new country. The irony of it all is that my home city of Calgary is just 200 kilometers away from the Canadian Rockies, which offers some of the world’s most stunning scenery as well as a plethora of hiking opportunities. Yet, my first hike took place in New Zealand. [Read more…] about Why Everyone Should Explore Their Own Backyard

Tanzania Safari Disaster – How A Beautiful African Safari Became One Of My Worst Travel Experiences

Elephants in Tarangire

When one thinks of an African safari, thoughts of wild plains filled with giraffes, lion’s and elephants likely come to mind. After all, it’s one of the best places on Earth for wildlife encounters. A safari was something I had always dreamed of doing but due to the high cost, I had no immediate plans of making it happen. Then, an email arrived in my inbox.

The email came from an African safari company in Arusha, Tanzania called Tan-Pride. According to the email, I was talking to the co-owner, Greyson, who was interested in expanding internationally. He read my blog and wanted me to be their Canadian partner. I was intrigued by the offer but my “scam radar” went on high alert. I had to do some research to make sure it was a legitimate company.

I started with their website, which was very dull. Most links didn’t work and it certainly didn’t bode well for a company offering $4,000+ tours. I couldn’t find any reviews online, which also seemed odd. At this point, I would have turned down the offer but then I found a woman in one of my travel-related Facebook groups who also operate a safari company out of Arusha. After explaining the situation, she had her husband look into the company for me. After a few days, he confirmed that Tan-Pride was real. He confirmed that they had an office and a fleet of vehicles, although he also mentioned that the vehicles were not maintained to his standards. The Best Way to Book Hostels Around the World

The Best Way to Book Hostels Around the World

How to Book Hostels Around the World

Hostels are another popular choice of accommodation, especially for budget travellers. Hostels can be found almost anywhere in the world and are usually much cheaper than hotels. Hostels are also a better place to meet other travellers as they usually have a common room where everyone hangs out. Hostels also provide much better advice on destinations and things to do and hostels can be a good place to find people who will join you on adventures. In Australia, for example, you can find postings for people looking to rent apartments together, to rideshare around the country with, partake in activities together and so forth. Even if hotels are in your budget, you might want to stay in a hostel just for the social aspect. [Read more…] about The Best Way to Book Hostels Around the World

How to Couchsurf Around the World

How to Couchsurf Around the World

Why Couchsurfing is a Great Way to Travel

Couchsurfing is one of my favorite types of accommodation when traveling. It’s a community of like-minded travellers who are willing to let you crash at their place for free. While the name certainly implies that you’ll be sleeping on a couch, this isn’t always the case. When searching for a place to sleep, you can read profiles and search for people who have private rooms available rather than a couch, which comes in handy for couples and families. I have found couchsurfing to be the best way to meet friendly locals. Think about it – they are letting you stay with them for free! You can view their profile and see if you both share similar interests and if other people found them welcoming. Couchsurfing is much more work than Airbnb, hostels or hotels because you need to sift through your potential hosts, read their profiles and send messages to each and every one of them, waiting for a reply as to whether they can host you or not. You can’t just book it like you can with the other options. Also, couchsurfing is not the best option if you only plan on staying one night or have no interest in the host themselves. Hosts generally expect that you spend a little bit of time with them. After all, you’re staying in their house! Couchsurfing is built as a community so if you’re looking to actually meet and hang out with the hosts, this option is for you!

How to House-sit Around the World

How To Become a House-sitter

House-sitting is a great option if you’re looking to stay somewhere for a couple of weeks or more in one area. This can be really great for those wanting a local vibe as you’ll be staying in someone’s house in a local neighbourhood or in the countryside. House-sitting takes a lot of preparation in the beginning as you’ll need to create a well-rounded profile and research all the listings. I find house-sitting much more fitting for those without permanent jobs or for retired couples, though it can be for anyone. Typically, it involves taking care of pets or plants, so you need to be ready to do your part in exchange for a free place. [Read more…] about How to House-sit Around the World

How to Camp Around the World

The Best Ways To Go Camping Around The World

Camping is a unique option for both the more adventurous travellers or for those camping as beginners. It’s extremely popular among backpackers in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, but can be found in most countries around the world. While campgrounds are certainly the most common way to camp, some hostels also offer the opportunity to camp in their yard. As long as you have a tent, you’ll pay a fraction of the normal hostel fee and still have access to their bathroom and kitchen facilities. If you’re travelling long-term and really want to budget, this is something worth looking into. In some countries such as Australia, it’s also popular to just camp in your vehicle in designated areas. When I was in Australia in 2009, we just parked our vehicles on the sides of roads and slept but I’ve heard the police are clamping down on this. [Read more…] about How to Camp Around the World
