LL 017: Brad Hussey – Family and Freedom Through Freelancing

by Matt Leave a Comment

Brad hussey

In the 17th episode of the Live Limitless podcast I chat with Brad Hussey of Bradhussey.ca.

I met Brad at a bookstore after he reached out to me for Canadian travel hacking advice. Actually, Brad is the guy that helped design CanadianFreeFlyers.com. Brad has taken his coding skills to a new level, creating an online business teaching others how to code and how to start a freelance business. He does all of this while maintaining a family (he has a wife and two kids) and living in Canada.

Besides being an all-around great guy, what Brad has accomplished is quite impressive. Over 200,000 students have taken Brad’s Udemy courses and he has established himself as an authority in his field. You can find him at Bradhussey.ca.

LL 016: Steven Li – From Engineer to Photographer

by Matt Leave a Comment

Steven Li Live Limitless

In the 16th episode of the Live Limitless podcast I chat with Steven Li of www.stevenliphotography.com and FreeLifeExperiment.com. Steven is a friend of mine from Edmonton, Canada. I wanted to interview Steven because he ditched his engineering career to become a professional photographer. Ditching a career in engineering to take the path of an entrepreneur/freelancer is no easy task. He didn’t go back to school to study photography. He didn’t go to business school. He simply started practicing photography on his own time, found a welcoming group of inspiring people to be around, and slowly got his first few wins.

This is also a very special episode for the Live Limitless podcast because it’s the 1st episode after a long two-year hiatus. While I travelled the world with my wife, I decided to put a pause on the podcast as I was not yet prepared to operate from a backpack. Now I am back and re-launching the podcast in a much bigger way! We have some incredible guests lined up and there will be a new episode every Monday! In addition, I’ll be hosting workshop episodes as well where we do a live “case study”. For example, in episode 19, I’ll be going over a book marketing plan and launch strategy with Tom Morkes.

32 Tips I’ve Almost Learned from 32 Years

by Matt Leave a Comment

Alas, I am 32, and like most birthdays, I feel the same. However, I have noticed myself feeling more anxious over the last couple of years. It took me some time to figure it out but eventually I realized what the problem is. As a pretty ambitious person, I felt perfect in my early 20’s. After all, failures and set-backs didn’t mean much. I had loads of time left. Now they do mean something, at least to me. One failure feels like 100.

So, in learning to deal with that and to celebrate 32 years of learning about life, I thought I’d write out a list of 32 things I’ve “almost learned” over the last 32 years. I say “almost learned” because I certainly haven’t mastered all of them. I have simply learned them and will continuously try to implement and improve on them throughout life. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

I hope this list inspires you in some way. Feel free to share more tips that you’ve learned in the comment section below!

Exploring Dhamma | My 10-Day Vipassana Experience

by Matt 13 Comments

(This 3000-word article is a brief summary of my 10-day Vipassanā experience. An experience like this is hard to put into words but I hope it gives you an idea what it’s about and inspires you to consider trying it yourself)

Ever since I heard about Vipassanā meditation from Tim Ferriss (I think he mentioned it in his book or on his blog) I knew I had to try it out. Ten days of silence seemed like such a massive personal challenge, not to mention the fact that I’d also be giving up writing, reading, and all electronics. Plus, I’d be meditating for more than 10-hours per day!

Extreme? yup. Count me in.

Unfortunately, there weren’t any Vipassanā centres close to me and even though I had spent 6-8 months each year traveling through many countries that had them, the last thing I wanted to with limited time in an exotic country was spend 10 days in confinement.

Luckily, a centre opened up just a 3-hour’s drive from my home city of Calgary, Alberta. This helped me finally take the plunge. On June 30th, 2016, I drove to Youngstown, Alberta and started my path to enlightenment.

My First Cliff Jump

by Matt Leave a Comment

I must admit, my first cliff jump was not that crazy. It was only about three or four metres. However, it had a profound impact on my life.

It was only my second time out of Canada – a one-week trip to Cancun with my girlfriend at the time. Up until then, I hadn’t been a very adventurous guy but one day when we were tubing down a river at Xel-Ha Park, I noticed a cliff-jump and summoned up the courage to give it a try.

I climbed off my tube, swam to the shore, and climbed up to the platform. From there, I walked to the edge, looked down, and froze. It looked so high and although I knew I couldn’t back out and do the walk of shame, I just couldn’t make the jump. Then a little girl, maybe 8-years-old, ran by me and jumped off the cliff with no fear at all.

Now I really had to do it.

Flight of the Butterflies | Experiencing the Longest Known Insect Migration on Earth

Monarch Butterflies Mexico

(Note: Visiting the Monarch butterfly sanctuaries of Mexico was one of my 100 things to do before the age of 31 list. Ever since I learned about it, I wanted to make it happen. I’ve since been twice and have also completed all 100 things from “the list”. Want to see the list? click here.)

Deep in the forests of central Mexico’s mountains, a natural phenomenon takes place each and every winter. The forests become absolutely smothered in colourful monarch butterflies that have migrated all the way from Canada.
