Who Wants to Jump Off a Bridge This June?

by Matt 10 Comments

Nervously Smiling as I await my 130 foot jump off the Auckland bridge.

It’s hard to explain the emotions I was going through as I began my ascent to the top of the Auckland Bridge in Auckland, New Zealand. It was only 3 weeks before this that I jumped out of a plane at 15,000 feet. Why would jumping off a bridge from just 130 feet up scare me?

We’ll, all I can say is that jumping off a bridge was far more terrifying to me than jumping out of a plane. My heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty. As the instructor told me what I needed to do, I felt almost paralyzed. My main hope was to make it back up to the bridge.

As my name was called, I remember that feeling in my chest. Not just butterflies but thousands of angry ones fluttering around in my stomach. I could imagine my body wondering why I would put it through something like this.

I had the bungy strapped to my ankles like ankle cuffs which made it hard to walk out to the ledge. I felt like I was a prisoner being walked out to the plank by pirates waiting to throw me to the bottom of the sea.

There I was, finally reaching the ledge of the platform, standing more than 130 feet above the ocean. The instructor told me to smile for the camera which I tried nervously to do while all my muscles were concentrating on the fall I was about to experience. My knees were trembling out of control and I felt like I wouldn’t have the energy or the ability to jump if I wanted to.

I remember that the instructor told me to jump as soon as they said 3 because:

A. If I hesitated, I may never jump; and

B. They monitor all the sailboats passing underneath and wouldn’t want me jumping into one.

and with that, they began the count. [Read more…] about Who Wants to Jump Off a Bridge This June?

Why you’ve already won the lottery (plus $100 for 10 comments)

by Matt 42 Comments

If you’re reading this post, you’ve already won the lottery.

It’s called the lottery of life.

If you have been born into a country like Canada, the United States, or any other developed country, you’ve won the birth lottery. You’ve won the lottery of being able to grow up in a country of freedom, education, and considerable wealth.

It’s sad that the birth lottery exists. Not everyone is so lucky.

If you lost the lottery, you won’t get the fortune of freedom and education. You won’t have the same opportunity to read or write and you won’t have access to clean water. You’ll probably be guaranteed a life of poverty because you don’t have the basic needs available to you or the education needed. You definitely won’t be able to participate in world discussions since you won’t have a computer or an Internet connection. You’ll be lucky to have a roof over your head and enough food to stay alive.

However, if you win the lottery, you will have the opportunity to read and write. You will have access to clean water and the opportunity of wealth. You will be able to learn about the planet and participate in discussions made possible because of a wide array of products such as computers, the Internet, iPads, iPhones, and many other electronic gadgets. You will have access to health care, healthy food, and sanitary waste disposal. You will also have access to all the basic needs as well as the opportunity to travel and think about deeper things in life.

It’s amazing what the simple chance of birth can do to how your life turns out. I think about how amazing the difference can be when born into one family compared to another.

For example, [Read more…] about Why you’ve already won the lottery (plus $100 for 10 comments)

Turning Life Upside Down

by Matt 1 Comment

Mexico City

Have you ever considered turning your life upside down?

Maybe making an erratic change like moving to an entirely new city and leaving everything you knew behind even if just for a little while?

My girlfriend is in the process of turning her life upside down right now.

It takes a lot of guts to make immense changes to your lifestyle and the one word that came to mind when I think of her latest decision to move to Canada is:

Courageous. [Read more…] about Turning Life Upside Down

You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Travel

by Matt 30 Comments

Exploring Egypt with Matthew Bailey

I don’t know what it is about the terms “rich” and “travel” that society has seemed to put together but unless your talking about how “rich” in thought, character, and experience you will be when you travel, then they have nothing to do with each other.

I was recently watching an old movie called Wall Street and heard Charlie Sheen’s character say he wanted to make insane amounts of money so that he could leave the game and ride his motorcycle across China.

Wait a minute! I rented a motorbike in Indonesia for $3/day so I can assure you that insane amounts of money are not needed to ride across China or any other part of Asia.

Sadly, most people think like this. The experience of travel and vacations has constantly been sold to us with a “cash value”. Somehow society has been coerced into thinking that the experience of travel is intertwined with the amount of money you can spend on such a trip.

What bullshit. [Read more…] about You Don’t Need to Be Rich to Travel

Tearing My Box to Shreds!

by Matt 3 Comments

About 14,992 feet from hitting the ground

I can’t believe you jumped out of a plane!

This was one of the many reactions I received upon returning from my 6-month adventure through New Zealand and Australia.

I couldn’t really believe it either. It seemed like just a few years ago I was too nervous to get on the rollercoaster in West Edmonton Mall because it went upside down. I never would of thought that I would be scuba diving in the ocean at nighttime or jumping off bridges in New Zealand.

When I look back on life as a kid and as a teenager I can definitely see little bits of the adventurous soul in me but nothing compared to what it is today.

One of the biggest leaps I made that began my journey of self-discovery was packing up my things and moving to another city. I was 20 at the time and was growing tired of the town I had grown up in. It was a rich town where everyone made heaps of money working in the oil industry but for some reason I just didn’t want anything to do with it. I had all these dreams bottled up inside of me of adventure and mystery. I wanted to explore the world and all the amazing things that exist beyond the place I grew up in. I decided to take a leap and move. It was an exciting time leaving home and living on my own in a much bigger city. I enrolled in business school and rented a place right across the street. Life was great. [Read more…] about Tearing My Box to Shreds!

Just in Time for the New Year: How to Transform Your body in 12 weeks

by Matt 10 Comments

I’m not fat anymore!

It actually took me awhile to realize this.

I grew up as a chunky kid throughout elementary and junior high school and always looked at myself as being out of shape. Even after completing this challenge, I could barely see my changes until I looked at the before-and-after pictures. It’s amazing how our minds can trick us.

After college, I had gained an extra 20 pounds of beer and burger fat and finally decided to commit myself to the 12-week Body-for-Life challenge that I had wanted to do since I was 17. I made a promise to myself that nothing was going to hold me back this time. No parties. No alcohol. No cheating. These 12 weeks would be one of my greatest challenges to date but one worth completing.
